celebrate, celebrate

We had to show Mom a good ol' Montana float night for her birthday!  She has only floated the Yellowstone on a whitewater trip, and while that is LOTS of fun, there is nothing like a crisp Montana evening when all is quiet but the birds and a few river-side deer lapping up their last bits of water for the day to make you take a deep breath and say, "I live in the best place on the PLANET!"  It was a gorgeous evening and I think a good time was had by all.

Helping Dad row the boat.

I am pretty sure this was here letting us know about a "whale" sighting.

Thanks to Peter for rowing our tails down the River AFTER already putting in a full days work rowing clients down another River.  It was worth it to see my mom's smiles and to hear Matine's squeals as she was CERTAIN she saw "whales" in the Yellowstone River.   She even convinced herself (after we told her) that some splashes in the River were the "whales" and she immediately says to us (with great certainty), "I need to hold him."  Good stuff.
Happy JimPa

Love that fried chicken.

Mi Mama!

Best seat in the House.

Fried chicken, cupcakes, and beer = $20.00.  Time with your family on the Yellowstone River = Priceless!

Baby gets to float (and wear uncomfortable things)

We finally did it - we put our child in a floating device, strapped a large life jacket that squished her cheeks (face and butt) even more than usual, allowed to dogs to come, get wet and smell really bad - and FLOATED THE YELLOWSTONE RIVER.  We picked a nice quick float for our maiden voyage - Carters Bridge to 9th Street Island was a good choice.  Any longer and Matine would have freaked out and I would have drowned Peter.  I was reminded why I don't float or try to have Peter teach me ANYTHING.  Ever.  It's not good for marriage, romance, stress acne, anything.  Pete floats this river everyday of his life, but this fun little outing with his lovely wife and toddler stretched even his amazing skills.

Could anyone be any cuter in a large blue life jacket and ruffles on their butt?
baby wedgie!
before the proverbial storm
What's that over the edge, Dad?
I love having my friends on the boat too!  (she walked around the boat, petting each dog the entire time)
I think you are supposed to "sit" Oliver - that's what they keep telling me.
Do I look relaxed?   I can't see my feet.
This is her, "really, I am having fun... just keep rowing" face.
Is that a finger he is subtly sending me? No....
We stopped briefly at the "warm spring" part of our float where some warmer water meets the river.  Fun place for a dip.
Oh Gaucho... You are in heaven, aren't you buddy!

Missouri River Camping Extravaganza!

If you have ever considered camping with small children, you might want to consider getting a larger vehicle.

This weekend we decided to brave it all and go to the Missouri River, one of Pete's most favorite spots on earth, to do some "camping" with our little gal and three dogs. We were THRILLED when our friend Melynda wanted to come along with her two kiddos too. She documents her version of our trip here. Last summer we did a couple of nights camping with Matine and they went really well (albeit, she was teeny tiny and still unconscious for most of the time, oblivious to outside noises, light, etc.).

I should have realized when I was done packing the SUBURBAN and there was no room for Oliver in the car that we had a LOT of stuff, but it wasn't until "camp Howell" was set up that the full hilarity of it all sunk in. It looked like we were a traveling circus and moving to this spot on the River for a month, at least. And Melynda hadn't even showed up yet with her truckload and 10 man tent (that ended up being as big or bigger than the canvas wall tent).

I did a lot of camping growing up and in college and before I married Peter. I prided myself of the "simplicity" of what I could bring, how light I could make my backpack. Those days are long gone! My husband likes to be comfortable and he said he won't backpack again unless the horses are carrying our gear! We had full size cots, Paco-pad sleeping pads thatt are 5 inches thick, tables, multiple stoves, 2 lanterns that hung from our 13 foot tall canvas wall tent! I haven't even unpacked Matine's things yet... Since we had a tent the size of our downstairs, why not bring the pack and play? Blankets? Her new Okie Dog bike thingy from Okie Uncle Clark, a bag of toys .... I have to admit, it was cushy.

The experience was great, terrifying, and hilarious all at once! So Melynda pulls up and I thought she might just see the small village we had set up and turn her car around, but as I mentioned she too was packing a load. Kid bikes and the largest "pop up" tent I had ever seen (which was great by the way and I would highly recommend it to families who choose to camp after reading this blog post).

Let the fun begin ... Matine was great help as we set up - she kept the dogs out of our hair by taunting them with her snacks.

Our humble little home away from home ... for 2 nights and 2 days.

I love camping - but not my messy hair!!!

Peeking in and out of the tent doors was mucho fun for the 1-year old.

Our very pretty and green view from camp.

Holy STUFF - we don't mess around folks! This is bedtime, night#1 - reading a few books and totally aware that it was 10:30 at night and WAY past the little gals bedtime. What would the night look like for us?

Yikes. Well, this is morning after our first night. Matine was catching a couple extra minutes of sleep because she really only slept from 11pm - 2am, then she came to bed with me in my "cot" and slept off and on all night, leaving me COMPLETELY awake from 2am on... I was sure she was going to roll right off the cot onto the ground.

Don't let the morning after shot of the two cute kids fool you. They were not rested and not this smiley all day. We all did have fun during the days, playing with rocks, dirt, picnics, little walks along the river, and crawling all over things (it was just those nights that were killer).

A smorgasbord of camp goodies- all kids and dogs are waiting.

Melynda and cutie pie Finn (18 months) - notice the dog nose ever present when food is present. Oliver!!!!!!!!!

The boat that stayed hooked up to Pete's car was a HIT! It was a giant playpen that kept the kids entertained for quite some time. Did you know that you really don't need to actually get ON the river to give your kids a memorable boat experience?

Kids are cute.

Coffee mug, toy horse, boat = happy

The small village and it's villagers.

This is what one passerby assumed was our "week-long fishing camp." I guess I can see why he assumed that...

There is nothing more indulgent and wonderful than snuggling with your sweet kid in a nice cool tent, listening to birds and the river (and the occasional car and dump truck from the nearby gravel pit).

This was night #2 -- she slept ALL night this night -- convincing us that we CAN DO THIS AGAIN and not lose our minds!

Oliver hogs the bed - he's waaaayyyy too good to be sentenced to sleeping on the ground like a dog. Oliver!!!!!!!!!!!

Very serious reading going on here.

Ah, Anders - Morning #2 - Melynda has had no sleep for 2 nights and we all decide to pack up camp and head to Helena for some carousel riding... and hopefully some naps in the car. The wind on night #2 was so horrendous, we were afraid even the camp hotels might blow away.

Next trip - same great company, more pretty scenery, and hopefully a little less wind.

Matine Is Dedicated in the Yellowstone

This morning we dedicated Matine John Howell in the waters of the Yellowstone River. While we had family in town and our resident "minister" (Jim Wofford) was visiting we figured now was as good a time as any.

Matine wore a baptismal gown that has been in the Buell (Joellyn's side) family for 120 years. Every Buell that we know of has worn this same gown. It really is a work of art.

We passed Matine around, each stating our wishes, hopes and prayers for her. She got a little Yellowstone River water on her cute head and away we hiked back.

I really like this one spot that is a bit of a jaunt of the road. We had to walk over the train tracks, under a bridge, through some brush and a bit of mud -- but, oh well. It was peaceful, quiet and along the waters that have become Our Church over the years.

This is a bit of video (before the batteries died).

Abducted

I know it seems like little green men might have taken me to the planet Zoltar, never to return again... But alas, it was only a visit from the FAMILY! That often FEELS like an alien abduction - if you have ever been around my father and brother for 5 days straight, you would understand. No matter how much coffee and red bull I drink, I just can't seem to keep up or over talk them. And boy, did I try!

I have MANY great pictures and stories to share with you - and I will, as soon as I have 2 minutes at my home with my camera alone. BUT, no rest for the weary. The parentals got on a plane this morning, I am at work, and I leave at 6:00pm to head to Ennis with Pete to do the first round of set up of our elk camp for 2 days.

Some things you will get to see when I DO get a chance to post include:
  • Seeing the kids I used to watch in College - ALL grown up!
  • General funny Scott pictures
  • Clark pretending to be an Indian / Cowboy / City Slicker on a horse
  • Willie Nelson in RED LODGE and the ridiculous condition of Clark, Scott and Brooke (let's just say it includes a short bus, camping in the street, throwing up, and dad's new son Dustin)
  • I got Clark a REAL SWISS person for his birthday!
  • Baby showers
  • Fishing
  • Floating the river and me intertube sinking the entire float.
  • Peter and Eric breaking our new horse
  • Lots of dog stuff
  • General crazy Howell life that has not stopped in 2 weeks -- I need to sleep!

Boys Will be Boys

Peter was lucky enough to be invited on an all boys camping trip this weekend with our friend Mike Cox and his two boys, Caid (4yrs) and Brad (2 yrs). They went to Peter's family friend's ranch on the Boulder River and camped, made a fire, cooked smores, and caught fish. VERY boys weekend. They all 4 even stayed in the tent together!
Luckily, the Cox's kids are awesome and the kid stuff didn't freak Peter out too much! I actually think he had a great time!

While Peter and Mike were chillin with the boys on the Boulder, the girls had some fun too! The gals from our girls trip came over and we re-enacted the trip through watching all the 500 pictures on teh big screen. Honestly, I am not sure which is funnier... The actual trip or seeing the INSANE photos and laughing at them later. It was great. I am so glad girls know how to have fun!
It was a great weekend
