Hunting in Dillon with the Hoffmanns

Peter spent a week hunting in the Dillon area with Eric, his dad Ken and uncle John.  Ken and John have been looking forward to this trip for about a year - practicing their shots each night together and talking about it quite a bit.   Pete put all our wall tents and hunting gear to good use and they all had quite the adventure, Pete getting to hunt for FUN for the first time in a while.  They were out for elk,  but had better luck with deer.  Oh well.  I think they had a nice trip and the weather couldn't have been prettier for them.

Fall in the mountains, ahhhhh.

Their cozy home away from home for the week.

I bet you couldn't tell that these guys were brothers ... or that they love John Deere green.

Real Live Hunting Moment to Make You Laugh

This is not staged or a joke. This was really taken by our hunter during our last week of Hunting Camp. Our very own Keegan Isaly is the guy/guide "taking the picture" in the video and hunter Steve is well, you will just have to watch. I hope you have an empty bladder.

Western Extreme & Adventures Abroad

Well, week 1 of archery camp are over. They were VERY successful and everyone left "happy campers." They have already committed to coming again next year!

They raved about the accommodations, the food and the entire staff.

The staff - Jim, Josh and Keegan were all GREAT! It was Keegan's (Jacqueline's brother) first time guiding and apparently he did an awesome job! On his very first day -on his own- he led his hunters to a bull, called it in, they shot it, and he quartered and packed it out --- all at the ripe age of 20! Yay for Montana kids growing up in the wilderness.

I think the entire group learned ALOT from these hunters - they are definitely professionals and have a ton of experience hunting, filming, traveling. They even "tipped" Josh and Keegan with brand new bows! Not a shabby tip!

As I mentioned, this group of hunters came with a camera crew and they filmed footage for a few of their nationally syndicated hunting shows. You will soon see the footage, Peter, Keegan, Josh, Jim and the hunters on the Outdoor Channel!

Here are some images of the week - there will surely be more to come!

The Gang - Peter, Jeff, Keegan, Keith, Jim, Ray, Jim, Josh, Randy and another Josh (Travis was taking the picture)

Apparently they do alot of this between noon and 3 each day.

Elk Camp - Archery Week 1

The first week of Elk Camp with Willow Ranch Outfitters included some special hunters - a couple of our best friends- Mike Cox and Matt Blank, along with Mike's dad George.

These are some pics they took - they are great! Check them out at the Cox's Picasa Web Albums.

We go in next week for 3 more weeks of hunting fun!

To Feed a Small Army

Well, it's official. I have cooked so much food I no longer want to eat. Ever.

I cooked from 7am until 7pm yesterday... Without stopping. Ok, maybe to have a pinto bean burrito and occasionally look up from the stove to watch August Rush (another great movie and requires an entire post).

Pete goes into Elk Camp today. This first week will be set up - only our friends and us will be there (fun!), but starting next Friday the hunters will be there each week through the 2nd week of November.

Did I know that it would take a long time to prepare the food? Yes. Do I have a degree in planning this sort of thing with great ability? Actually, yes I do -it's called Leisure Service Management. Did I still procrastinate and wait until the day before Pete leaves to cook food for hungry men? Yes, of course I did, I am a Cottongim whether I like it or not!

What we did Wednesday night:

Went to Costco and bought 2 overflowing cart fulls of food -- argued a bit when I "clipped the car keys" to the cart and of course we didn't end up with the same cart after we checked out and I had to comb the cart caddies and ALL THE CARTS AT COSTCO in the parking lot at 9pm for my keys.... That was a really special moment for me.

Thursday Brooke:

Made 2 additional runs to the grocery store for things we missed
Cooked, sliced and diced 5 large stockpots of homemade chili
Cooked, sliced and diced 5 large stockpots of homemade beef stroganoff
Cooked, sliced and diced 5 weeks worth of homemade meatloaf
Baked 2 additional loaves of banana bread
Baked 4 loaves of zucchini bread
Divided the jumbo bags of oatmeal, Krusteaz, cornbread mix into individual bags for each week, labeled them.
Divided out the toilet paper for each week, as well as the candy, granola, snacks, etc.
Cracked 30 eggs into a nalgene to carry into camp.
Asked the guy at the deli for 10 - individually wrapped 1 lb bunches of bacon (and dealt with his looks of disgust).
Stuffed all the chili, stroganoff and meatloaves into freezer bags to freeze (can you say mess!)
Took over the basement and had piles of food organized / labeled for each week in boxes.
Tracked down 2 new sections of stove pipe for our camp stoves
Took Oliver to the vet to get his "drain tube" taken out of his massive lump on his throat.
Showered, tried to look presentable and went to dinner with Pete and his clients.
PASSED out at 10:00pm.

Sorry, there are no pictures of my soiled kitchen to show you...

I can't beleive this is our life!

Peter gets out his elk bugle and makes elk calls EVERY morning and night now. He is excited to say the least... We took 2 days off to go with Storrs into the backcountry to see the extent of the area that we will now be outfitting! There are no words. Check out these pics... We took down one of our summer camps, checked out the lakes, passes and creeks, and "elky" areas of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness! We rode 15 miles / day and my butt is SORE, slept in one of our wall tents, and had a classic camp experience. The dogs were amazing. They ran, rolled, and explored to their hearts content. Our 3 of our 4 new horses went in with us. First time packing and they all did GREAT! No blow ups, fights, or incidents.

My cowboy -- isn't he so HOT!

Brooke and Storrs checking something out.

At camp - the horses freely graze all over and DON'T run away... while we pack, cook and work.

Peter and Storrs debating how we are going to fit everything onto 4 horses. They are miracle workers when it comes to packing those horses.

The mighty string -- on our way out.

Cool shadows and horse

Pete feeding our new baby, Deamo a treat for being SUCH a great horse!

Another 49'er Winer

The girls of Livingston get together each month to drink wine and have fun. Each month a new girl "hosts" and this months gathering took place at Shana's house last night. I was thrilled because she is literally 2 blocks from my house which means my walk home AFTER my bottle of wine was much shorter than usual.

Jacqueline and new Livingston-ite Sarah came over to our house for a pre-winer winer... It is always fun to just chat and hang out with your girls. Jacqueline had to leave early b/c her awesome boyfriend bought them dance lessons for Christmas. Isn't that adorable? Soon, they will tearing up the dance floors and trying out for Dancing with the Stars. Sarah and I meandered down the street to see who was out and about this month...

Shana, Christina, and Levia "wining"

Shana is awesome. For those that don't know her, let me give you a run down - she hunts more and better than most dudes, she hunts with a bow, a recurve bow, that she made herself out of wood! The delicious food she cooked last night came from one of the THREE deer she killed herself this season. The cute house that she hosted us in has been gutted and remodeled by her! She is a carpenter and works construction and she just took out her old floors, cut and laid brand new gorgeous hardwood, tore out a wall, DRYWALLED it, painted it and hand crafted a lovely new peninsula. She makes furniture and can do just about anything handy and hard. PLUS - she is just super fun, super beautiful and hilarious.

In a nutshell -- Shana is my hero. Her fiance literally hit the jackpot in finding her. Wanna be my wife, Shana?

Above: As with all gatherings around here - it's also a DOG PARTY!!!!
Below: Shana with her handmade bow (wow!) and Darcy - soon to be famous.

Weekend List

What happened this weekend:
1. I drove to Ennis to hang out with Peter and our friends Billy and Storrs Bishop before they went into camp for another week.
2. I thought I would only get to stay Friday night till Saturday afternoon, but I got to stay ALLLL day AND Saturday night - BONUS! Yay!
3. I got to pet and play with the horses... They are wonderful.
4. We got to hear some really fun and outrageous stories of the Alaskan Wilderness, Storrs' experiences doing everything under the sun in his lifetime (this includes running a horse drawn sleigh business, being a bad-a climber and dirt-bag ski bum in Aspen - before Aspen was the monstrosity that it is today-, realtor, store owner, hunting outfitter, farmer, teenage wanderer, and more).
5. I recommend anyone take the time to get to know Storrs Bishop III and his lovely wife Bev.
6. I sold my Honda Civic on Sunday! This good ol' faithful greenie has been with me till my Exloder died in college. It has taken me MANY miles with MANY people (physically and figuratively). I will miss the Civ... Wish her luck with her new owners who I am sure will love her just as much as I did.
7. I showed Peter's rental house to some possible tenants - both very nice.
8. I cooked a delicious Thai Chicken Chowder with Loni and Marni on Sunday night.
9. We watched the fabulous Sunday night show, "Brothers and Sisters." I love Sally Fields matriarch role in this show and the hilarious dysfunctionality of the family.
10. I bought paint to touch up and paint my outside side door and window trim. I would like it to all finally match
11. I went for a run with my friend/neighbor Leah - 4 miles.
12. I soaked in the tub this morning with Loni and Marni and we had coffee and watched the dogs play and be ridiculous in the cool morning air.
13. Peter gets home Saturday night... the countdown is on!
14. We have been married for 1 month TODAY!!!!!!!!

ELK CAMP - Fall is here!

Montana life is usually measured in "seasons." Not the 'big four' that most people think of - summers, spring, winter and fall. Montana seasons are: fishing season, hunting season (bow and rifle), ski season, and for some "river season" (kayakers and boaters).

Well, the day fishing season ended, Peter and I found time to get married and the day we got back, it was straight into hunting season.

Peter works for a terrific man, Storrs Bishop. Isn't that the greatest name? Storrs is actually the IV Storrs Bishop in the line. Storrs has been running a hunting outfitting camp / business in Ennis, MT for over 30 years. His lease is spectacular. At the south end of the Gallatin Range, his camp is 5 miles up Sentinel Creek and along Cougar Creek. Now you can ask Peter or Storrs the name of each peak, hillside and tree and they could tell you - but I am lucky that I remember the town we were nearest.

The hunters arrive on Saturday, so there is much work to be done to get the camp set back up for the season! It is in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness area, so when season is over it has too look like no one was ever there- which means every pole, log, tent, chair, stove, and piece of equipment is packed in and out every fall.

At 8,500 feet and in the Lee Metcalf there is already about 1ft of snow in many parts. It is still warming during the day and freezing many nights, so there is alot of MUD!

Peter and I, our friends Jeannette and Laurie, and Storrs loaded up 9 horses on Saturday morning and went up to camp. Saturday was a very cloudy day - no cold- but not sunny and cheery. We set up the cooks and guides tents, the groover (pooper tent), stoves, cots and chairs.

We slept in the tent that we erected, on the dirt covered ground which we cleared 6 inches of snow off of, and had a delicious chili dinner and oatmeal / banana bread breakfast. We were completely wiped out. Riding horses when you are not used to riding every day will make your body ache and moan in ways you never knew possible.

Suprisingly, we all slept very well. There was lots of talk of grizzlies in the area and we say a few tracks on the way in and heard some "tall tale" stories from the hunters we passed coming in on Saturday. I have been recovering from some ailment that was caught during wedding week and was so doped up on Nyquil a bear could have slept in my sleeping bag with me and I would not have known the difference. Nyquil or not, there is something so great about sleeping in 35 degree high mountain air, and not hearing a sound but the crunch of snow, an occasional rustle of a horse, adn the snoring and breathing of your friends sleeping 6 inches from your face. The dark is so dark.... you can see more stars than anywhere and actually see the milky way galaxy.

Sunday morning we slept in and awoke to the bluest skies and cleanest, freshest air. The moutains looked gold from the morning sun and there were high peaks, pines and beauty
everywhere you looked.

Laurie, Jeannette and I were getting a total kick out of the whole experience. It was very "old time romantic" to ride in on horseback, work with your hands, and set up camp. We really felt like mountain women and did not want it to end - no matter how achy and tired we got!

Sunday the gals actually fell (chopped down) 3 standing trees, cut them in quarters, then lasooed them to Peter who drug them down the hill to camp by horseback. Once they were there we sawed the logs while Peter split the wood. It was great!

We took a scenic ride to the top of the ridges around camp where we saw breathtaking views of nearly every range and peak in the area ... including the Tetons in the distance. The air was so clear and hardly a cloud in the sky.

It was extremely muddy! This made for some really risky and "adventurous" horseback riding. While these horses were the sweetest, most well behaved and solid horses you could wish for, it was quite scary still to be on a horse that was completey SLIDING 20 feet at a time on a very steep slope. My horse 'Nick' took a small spill which I miraculously did not end up under! For many parts of the ride down, we opted to walk the huge beasts. That was risky too, as we led them, they were at risk of sliding right into us. Peter, Mr. Horseman, got a kick out of watching us giggle, fall, and talk the entire ride. I think he was used to the hunters and men in camp who hardly speak and stay quiet in hopes of seeing bears and elk. Not the girls! We made about as much noice as we could - not deliberately - we're just giggly girls having fun. But, surprise surprise, no wildlife was to be seen - not even a nice bunny or squirrel. I see now why hunting is typically a "man's sport."

As you can see in the pics below, we had tons of laughs and fun. I am sure our bums will feel the 12 miles on a horse and all the wood cutting, but it sure made for a terrific way to get out in Montana and enjoy the fall. Weekends liek this are what makes living in Montana all worth it. To be with dear friends, miles from any form of civilization, to experience true wildness, feel the fear of bears and wildlife encounters, work in the snow and cold with your hands, and be home in a warm bed 2 days later.... Nothing like it in the world. I am so grateful.

Peter and I find it ironic that 1 week ago we were saying "I Do" on a BEACH in the sun, swimming in the ocean and getting tans. We celebrated our 1 week anniversary in multiple layers, snow, and on top of horses in the mountains. We LOVE our life!
